The 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Biomedicine category goes to Prof. Robert J. Lefkowitz (New York, 1943) for identifying the receptors targeted by around half of todays prescription drugs. Lefkowitz is author of more than 850 research papers that at the time of writing have been cited on over 95000 occasions. His findings have led to the development of numerous drugs for a wide variety of conditions, above all in neurology (Parkinsons disease), cardiology (arterial hypertension) and diabetes.

Dr. Sung-Woo Kim is an assistant professor of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Clinical Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is also Canada Research Tier 2 Chair in Cancer. He received his Ph. D in Dalhousie University. Cancer research is his number one mission.
